yesterday, 8-9pm was earth hour. It was an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of March 29 at 8 pm local time until 9 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions. So we did. 8-9pm, we had our lights turned off and used candles for lighting. Unfortunately, when I went out to see if anyone does care of the environment, it's like only two houses in our street cooperated (including ours). my my. So I sent text messages to some friends about this earth hour thing. I asked them if their lights are off. A lot replied and about 90% of them said it wasn't. Some were having parties, some were playing tong-its, some were drinking alcohol, some were surfing the net. aw.. sad. .. couldn't sacrifice an hour.
anyway, so when the lights are back again, I watched the "An Inconvenient Truth" of Al Gore. For maybe an hour and a half, it explained to people the effects of CO2, global warming, how each one contributes to the world's destruction, etc, etc,, etc. nothing but the truth. And so, no matter how inconvenient it was as stated in the title, people (especially the skeptics) should care.
Maybe to summarize the whole thing...
The sun gives off sun beams which reach the earth and in turn, it goes back to space through a thin layer of atmosphere. Because of pollution and such, carbon dioxide is produced rapidly. Now Carbon dioxide thickens this thin layer of the atmosphere. As the layer thickens, more sun beams are trapped in the planet, thus warms the planet.
There's another, regarding Antartica and another. Antartica has like the most mass of ice on earth and it acts as a mirror for sun beams. So when sun beams hit Antartica, it goes back to the outer space. But through global warming, parts of this Antartica melts. So as the sun beams of the sun come, some of them hit Antartica and reflects, while some hit the water and get absorbed. Then the heated water will help melt the whole Antartica. And Antartica melts, the water level of the world will rise, erasing large parts of the world. Global warming also brings drought and flooding, also hurricanes. One point Al Gore made is that what Earth made in 10,000 generations, we are destroying in one lifetime. haaaah. it's hard to explain. just watch the film. It's complete with animations and pictures to help people understand.
here's some ways to help reduce co2 : http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/whatyoucando/
You'll see, after watching the film, the Earth is slowly dying. What about the future of our future children? One day, they may grown and blame their parents for not doing something while they can. People may see the future with flying cars, tall buildings, teleporters or so, anything high-tech. Well... With everyone's cooperation, that may come true. Now look at that Earth Hour thing, maybe 10% of those aware only cooperated. hay. May God bless His world.
