Down With Fiscal Conservatism

Fiscal conservatism directly supports ideological social conservatism by cutting funds to education, health care and food and shelter programs for the poor. You can't be both a social liberal and fiscal conservative. So, Blue Dog Democrats, simply supporting stem cell research doesn't cut it for a health care agenda. You fiddle while Rome burns.
What about starvation in our midst? Can't we provide at least minimal nutrition to those who are at their most destitute? Many people will at one point in their lives find themselves without food, shelter or both. Fiscal conservatism only exacerbates that possibility. What about medical bankruptcy? Fiscal conservatives blocking health care reform in our government by objecting to raising taxes on those who are doing well condemn everyone to that possibility.
I used to consider fiscal conservatism the "good kind" and social conservatism the "bad kind," but have long come to understand they are both dangerous philosophies.

There was this one idea George Bush II had that was very bright, very enlightened, very compassionate: to have the government help fund existing relief programs carried out by religious organizations. That was one idea of the Bush Administration I was actually excited about, and it never happened. I understand some people resigned from his administration over that. Others resigned over starting a war of choice, a war we will never extracate ourselves from for another 10 years.
