A Very CAUTIOUS Buy Low Candidate: High Risk = High Reward!

Look it’s getting late into the season, just over a third of the games have been played, so we’re going to have to dig a little deeper for solid Buy Low guys. Don’t get me wrong, they’re out there, we just have to do some extra research. At this point the two best opportunities we’re going to get will be either players that have had a recent bad string of games, maybe even up to a month’s worth, or players coming off of injuries that (hopefully) aren’t bad and won’t cause any recurring issues. It’s this last group that I’m going to focus on today. Before I issue this call though, let me be clear that there is (obviously) some risk associated here. You want to be sure to factor that into any trade offers you make. But where there is risk, there is reward! And I really have a good feeling about this guy.

The day before the start of the 2009 NBA season, it was confirmed that Blake Griffin had a stress fracture in his knee. Specifically, it was a fractured left patella. Prior to this injury, Blake had been dominating all the way back to college and high school. In the last season he played at Oklahoma, Griffin finished with 30 double doubles. This was 1 short of the NCAA record set by none other than David Robinson. He also set a Big 12 record for most rebounds in a collegiate career. In one game, his best ever, he scored 40 points and pulled down 23 rebounds, no small feat even at that level. He was the college player of the year, averaging 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds. Listed at 6’9” and 251 pounds, Blake can bang around with anyone in the NBA. In fact, in preseason he was averaging 13.7 points and 8.1 boards, again very solid numbers.

Then there’s the downside.

Blake injured his knee after a power dunk in his final preseason game. I’ve done some digging on this injury and am optimistic about what I read. A fracture in the patella takes about 6 weeks to heal, but the Clippers have sidelined Griffin for a bit longer to make sure that he heals properly and fully. That’s not the best news for current owners, but great news for prospective owners. Since he didn’t require surgery (a la Greg Oden) it’s not as serious of an injury, and importantly, he’s been able to keep weight on the knee which will help deter any muscle loss. Well this all sounds good, what’s the bad stuff? He also suffered a sprained MCL in his knee in 08, and tore cartilage in his other knee in 08, which required a scope. Total time missed for these two injuries? Three games…

So on the upside we have a rare talent that looks to be headed for a career as a double double machine. The player I most expect him to resemble is David Lee (who incidentally is also listed at 6’9” and 250 pounds). Now I realize that the Clippers already have two good bigs in Camby and Kaman, so initially one would expect that playing time will be limited. Have no fear, as we already expected, Marcus Camby is showing signs of injuries beginning to build and has already begun missing time. Expect the Clippers to slot Mr. Griffin right in. Of course, we also need to mention the Baron Davis factor. Everyone plays a little better with BD on the floor.

On the downside we grab a guy who has a somewhat history of knee troubles, though I can’t string any of them together, and he does seem to be able to tough stuff out. He’s young so should heal quicker too. With a third of the season gone, his injury risk concerns me a little less.

So it’s on you, care to make that gamble? Full disclosure here, I’ve already nabbed Mr. Griffin in my league, in a trade that cleared today. I sent John Salmons packing, and that’s about the best player I’d offer to get him if I were you. After holding him for so long, it’s likely his owner is ready to deal easily. The good thing about the timing of this call is that Blake is slated to come back around January 15th. That gives you roughly a week to close the deal, and another couple days for it to process, and voila! He’ll be on your team just as he’s back in the lineup.

Good luck working those deals. My suggestion is to try and get him as a ‘throw in’ for a 2-2 offer. Blake could have a serious impact on your team!

I have an abundance of Rebounding and want to improve my 3PM category in my H2H 14 team league with a thin FA selection. What players should I pursue and what would you recommend that I offer?
My core is Ellis, D. West, P. Pierce, CP3, B. Lopez, T Murphy, Hawes, Biedrins, Kenyon Martin, Speights, Artest
Thanks so much you rock!

Still trying to trade some assists and treys for some rebounds and blocks. My "Tyreke + J.R. Smith for Pau Gasol" offer was countered with something I didn't like, so I then offered Brandon Jennings + J.R. Smith for Pau. I'm sure Pau's owner was impressed with that 10-trey/41-point game by J.R. last week, that is why I keep trying to sell him to her.LOL

My latest offer, before she has even replied to the Pau Gasol one, is:
the same two guys (Brandon Jennings + J.R. Smith) for Antawn Jamison... Hmm, do you think it was too hasty of me?? Maybe I should have waited and, if she rejected the Pau trade, THEN try and get Antawn for the same price, as Pau is the better player of the two, isn't he?

woozy said...

blake is still in FA pool and probably would either drop charlie v, redd or tyrus thomas for him soon

enzo123 said...

how about dunleavy? is he a buy low candidate or just dont get that kind of guy?

Thief said...

Dunleavy is done, I'd rather have Blake than Charlie v.

Christo!! Don't turn away from this deal. If you can make it a 2-2, so be it. But honestly, Jr is junk.

Jason, I'd like to help so help me help you. Have you checked the sauce? Is peja around? Talk to me, what stats can we deal to get treys.

Lady thief is enjoying her birthday. =)

Homegrown said...

Hey Thief i like this idea of Salmons for Griffin. I'm a little weary of Griffin having to follow his injury close after he returns. I'm contimplating making the same offer Salmons for Griffin.

Christomir said...

Sorry, I couldn't quite get what you meant in your reply... ?

What I was saying was: at the moment I've offered that lady manager 2 deals - first I offered Brandon Jennings + J.R. Smith for her Pau Gasol and then, without having gotten a reply yet, I also offered the same two players for Antawn Jamison, so both bids are now pending.

The question was - do you think I should have held back and seen if she rejected the first one, before I offered the same price for a lesser player? (I think Pau is better than Antawn, right?)

Mike said...

Never got my answer.

I have a trade out with camby and jr for David west, what do you think?
What should i do to step this team up??

Thief said...

Christo, sorry, sounded like pau fell through and you we're goin for twan. I was sayin, yeah good deal for twan. Sorry. Go for twan if pau isn't available, make it a 2-2 if u can.

Mike, sorry for the delay, wifes birthday. Let me interpret, you asked me okur and Brand and Somewhat smith, or VC. Ten out of ten times I choose okur, brand an smith. Hope u do too.

Christomir said...

Yeah, I get it now - you think both deals are good.

But I am wondering if I should cancel the second one for now, cause otherwise they are both still pending and, if she accepts one, she will undoubtedly choose the one that's better for her - the Twan trade, whereas the Pau trade would be better for me, wouldn't it? The trouble is I've already "shown my cards" - even if I cancel it, she might see it in her e-mail and would know that I was desperate enough to be content with the lesser player for the same price.

So should I cancel the Twan trade for now and put it up again only if the Pau trade gets rejected, or should I leave them both pending and give the other manager the opportunity to choose?

Christomir said...

Sorry for making it so complicated and hence losing too much of your time to discuss my stupid trade strategy...LOL

Christomir said...

Heh, yeah, I know it was stupid of me. But I guess I'm just anxious and tired with how hard it is to trade in our league - most of my offers are either being snubbed right away, or just ignored and timed out after 10 days of no response... :(

Oh well, think I'll leave both offers standing and still hope the Pau Gasol one goes through. You and I know that he's the better player, but not everyone thinks like that - people do fall in love with some of their players...

Kristjan said...

What do you think of Offering J Kidd and Camby for Nash or is it too much??

y4rivera said...

Hey Thief, I was looking at the tiers and was wondering if some of the players have moved up or down a tier. Two names that popped out at me were Monta Ellis and Carmelo Anthony. Do you think they should be moved up to Tier 2 with their play this year? Are there any others who should be shifted around?

jb rdl said...

thief, i offered peja and devin brown for iverson. is it a good trade or i gave up too much?

i have several offers that i sent to other managers. in particular im trying to get iggy and biedrins or haywood for caron and someone else (maybe jennings), arent those good for me?

but about bynum. you sure he isnt injury prone this year again..his knee is tightening up? plus it's kind of a crowded frontcourt in LA land. what do you think altogether?

Thanks thief. My core is CP3, Paul Pierce, David West, Hawes, Biedrins, B. Lopez, T. Murphy, Kenyon Martin, Ron Artest, M. Ellis with Speights, Blair, Ersan on "bench" in a 14 team H2H.

What's up buddy? I missed draft day, and made a whole bunch of FA pickups and waiver wire grabs trying to fix my squad. Currently, I'm in last place of a 12 team h2h 9cat. league. Most people in my league aren't too trade savvy, and looks at my record as a means of not wanting to trade. After some renovations, here is my team:

R.Hamilton
J.Nelson
J.Salmons
P.Gasol
K.Perkins
A.Varejao
D.Rose
W.Chandler
E.Ilysova
K.Love
J.Flynn
A.Morrow
O.Casspi

The Sauce:
PTS=17.88
RBD=7.56
BLK=0.82

kevin durant
josh smith
troy murphy
brendan haywood
hedo turkoglu
erick dampier
andre miller
michael beasley
jason terry
jameer nelson

I need to add one player after the trade clears

My other opponent wants Durant and has

aaron brooks
dwyane wade
jrich
black griffin
brook lopez
speights
david lee
al harrington
jason thompson
kevin love
luol deng
tyrus thomas
jason kidd

As of right now he's offered Lopez and JRich.
He really wants Durant so I was wondering if I should just leave my team or try to do some thievin.

Thanks for all your help.

Is Channing Frye really a better 3pt shooter than Ray Allen as the stats show, and should I make that trade(MY:Ray Allen vs Channing Frye) if i need 3rees and some Blocks would also help????

Thief said...

Kris, I like the Nash trade. It's also a better way to get treys than Allen or frye.

Y4, good call, I'll review. Melo yeah but prolly not monta.

Jb, that's not bad for AI. Brown has no value to me.

Pavel, ayooooo, not sure why peeps b hatin bynum so much. He's delivering exactly as expected. Too early to judge injury risk tho.

Tcw, Luther head sucks

loho, yup!!

Ballhawk, sell Kevin love. Everyone wants summa dat. Cash in.

Jb, good lookin out

Jared, thanks bro

Hey thief. I didn't catch your recommendations from my post above. Is offering D. West for Bargnani a good idea and if that doesn't work/ is stupid, what would you suggest? Thanks you are the best on the web!

y4rivera said...

What do you think of Horford and Rashard for Amare?

Thief said...

Hey Jay, sorry I missed ya. I like you moving West, you can afford to lose some boards but I don't think bargs is the right target. What about J-Rich? Or possibly rashard Lewis? I think it'd be better for you to snag a 2 guard or SF. Tho I didn't see your blocks number, if u need blocks too then bargs is OK.

I was jus offered baron davis, pierce, and beasley for al jeff and lou williams......should i take this? i like the trade but im not sure it makes my team better

y4rivera said...

I don't mean to be a pain or sound unappreciative. I know you do a lot as it is. I wanted to make a suggestion for when you upgrade the tiers. I think it would be a good idea to break down the tiers even more. I noticed that there are players in the same tier who aren't of equal value. An example is Dirk and Kidd. They are both Tier 2 yet I would never do a Dirk for Kidd trade straight up. Another example is Joe Johnson and Jameer Nelson. They are both Tier 3 and I know Johnson is way more valuable than Nelson. Thanks and again sorry if I'm being annoying.

Cory said...

Hey, Thief, it's bandoogie again. I know I must seem like a pest, but I need your help. Some of the guys in my league are a little wishy-washy when it comes to trades, so they go back and forth. Anyway, now the guy who owns Garnett wants B. Davis for him. The guy who owns Dwight Howard and Marc Gasol is willing to give Marc Gasol for B. Davis straight up, and might be willing to let go Dwight for Davis and something extra. Which if any of these potential trades should I pursue? Thanks again.
Here's my team and sauce again:

Points: 17.2674312
Rbds: 5.832093134
Assists: 3.508055229
Steals: 1.180409127
TO: 0.503438835
3P'S: 1.050095319
Blocks: 0.546898147

Antawn Jamison
Kevin Martin
Baron Davis
Chris Paul
Eric Gordon
Allen Iverson
Kevin Love
David West
Chauncey Billups
Andrew Bynum
Caron Butler
Anthony Randolph
Charlie Villanueva

Thief said...

Clint, I'd do it.

Y4, that looks like a solid deal.

As for the tiers, I hear where you're coming from, but you gotta understand how they work. Is Dirk better than Kidd outright? Sure. But if my team needs dimes, Dirk ain't helpin me. Kidd is a top 3 guy for dimes, that's huge given how hard dimes are to get. It's easier to use two mid level players to get Dirks stats than it is to get Kidds. And don't sleep on jameer, again it's the dimes that attract me.

But yes I'll revisit and expand. Especially Melo, who looks to now be an elite scorer.

Thief said...

Bandooooogie, not a bother brother. Do the KG deal, that's a STEAL

Kristjan said...

Thanks alot, I went ahead with the JKidd Camby and Nash trade. But still what about Ray Allen vs Frye, its my first year playing so i dont know if maybe the veterans will pick it up in the end??? I just lost my lead in blocks so i could use Fryes 1 block and after getting nash I thought of picking up Perkins or Dalembert for extra blocks. I lost the lead because I traded Josh Smith for Amare.

y4rivera said...

I know what you mean. Its better to be good in all categories than to be excellent in some and weak in others. That's where the sauce comes in. I definitely understand that logic and agree with it. My problem is the league I'm in. I don't think the sauce works well with the settings. Maybe you can help me adjust it a little for my situation. Our categories are pts, ast, reb, blk, stl, and tos. They are all worth 1pt. The only thing is we don't get a win for every category. All the points from every category are added together. An example is if someone gets 20pts and 10ast their final score will be 30. If someone gets 30pts and nothing else there final score will be 30. The individual categories don't matter as much. Throughout the week the points accumulate and whoever has the most points wins the matchup.

Homegrown said...

all great points Thief. I like the correlation in stock fundamentals synced with fantasy stats. It's an interesting comparison, especially with the buy low sell high posts you have been writing. I also like that as much as you enforce trades at the end you preach discipline and recommend letting players sit with their teams a bit to develop. Good post! Quick question for you: Should I trade Haywood+Beasley+Speights for BGordon+EGordon? My lowest cats are FTM, FT%, 3PT% and scoring is slightly dipping. I'd love the addition of E and B Gordon, but would be left with only 2 Cs in Kaman and Bargnani (which I'm happy with). I'm also leading the league in blks and 3rd in rebounds. Should I be cautious of dealing Speights in this deal as a possible Dalembert trade is looming, thus increasing Speights role.
