Time To Take it to The Next Level

It’s time to take this blog to the next level! We’ve got the advice part covered with daily posts ranging from fantasy alerts to insights on how to work the competition. We’ve got the analysis part covered by discussing trades, looking at them through a quantitative lens and ensuring we achieve the right goals in dealing. There’s still one piece though, and it can’t be done without a little collaboration from you.

You see, in all the years that I’ve watched sports, and all the years I’ve traded stocks, I’ve learned to be able to tell the difference between real news vs. opinion and speculation. When it comes to researching a company, nobody gives it to you straighter (except in those rare unethical cases) that the company’s own people. After those guys, the next best group to follow is the industry professionals. For instance, if I want to check in on Electronic Arts (EA), I’m first going to see what the CEO has to say, then I’m going to check in with different gamer magazines and places like IGN (a website that covers video games). Likewise, if I’m going to find out information on the Boston Celtics, first I’m going to listen to Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers, and then I’m going to listen to the Boston Herald and Bob Ryan or WEEI (local sports radio), ya feelin me bro?

When Lady Thief starts hearing rumors about her favorite star QB Peyton, or hears some guy on ESPN comment that the Colts are in a state of disarray, she immediately turns to the Indianapolis Star (local newspaper) and then she tunes in to hear what Tony Dungy (former coach of the Colts) has to say. WHY you ask? Because it all boils down to jobs. It’s Bob Ryan’s job here in Boston to cover the Bruins, the Celtics, the Red Sox and the Patriots. Sure he keeps up to date with other teams, but his specialty is local juice. He’s ‘in’ with the teams. He gets scoops no one else gets. He talks to them weekly, that’s his job. Doc Rivers job is to coach the Celtics. When a reporter asks him a question, he answers, he doesn’t lie (notice I didn’t say Bill Bellichick, cause he does lie). It’s not his job to lie, it’s his job to tell you what he knows, and get back to coaching. On the flip side, what’s Stuart Scott or Mike Wilbon or Tony Kornheiser’s job? It’s to report on everything everywhere, which means they simply can’t get down to the same level of detail as the local guy.

So where am I going with all this? Well, hopefully I’ve convinced you to focus on local news over national news for the real juicy stuff. ESPN is for entertainment and big picture stuff, but your local newspaper is for getting ‘the scoop’. Now here’s where you all come in.

We need to get some collaboration going on these message boards. Plenty of you were hitting the comments section asking for any status updates on Gilbert Arenas or Paul Pierce. While I was able to offer the news as I heard it for Pierce, I’m not as ‘in tune’ with local DC news. But YOU are. If you live in or around DC, if your favorite team is the Wizards, you’re the guy we need to hear from. If you’re out in Indiana, give us the local scoop on Danny Granger’s status (his coach spoke to the Ind. Star last night, said Granger is 2 – 2 and a half weeks away). If you’re out in Miami, give us an update on what you’re hearing about Rafer Alston. Cause 9 out of 10 times it’s your local newspaper and your local news reporters that will get the info first.

I read the statement Jim O’Brien made on Danny Granger, then watched as several ‘entertainment’ based sports outlets reported it in 6 different ways. We need the words, we need the facts.

So I’m making a call to you all, every single person reading this blog. Open up and drop the juice. You out in LA? What’s the status on Blake Griffin? You out in Detroit? How’s Charlie V sounding after his recent performance? Let’s work together to make it easier on each other. Cause if it’s one thing this whole Gilbert Arenas affair taught us, it’s that TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Oh, and please quote the source too.

THIS is the kind of stuff that takes our game to the next level.

P.S. This goes for you too Christo. Even though you’re out in Bulgaria, we know you’re in love with Tyreke Evans, so get us the scoop on his playing time when Martin comes back!   =)

I guess being in Bay Area I can drop some tidbits from time to time. But the warriors are the hardest team to figure out. i like the idea though, so why not have a separate comment section for this type of stuff, so things don't get too crowded?

I'm so proud of you, husband. You admitted that Bill Belicheat lies! We'll make a Colts fan of you yet!

heres a glimpse of a forum: www.nbafantasee.yuku.com

pretty simple layout. not suggesting one is better than other (blog or forum) but as for these comments regarding trades and not specifically your post topic i think one could help. if you want help im willing.

forums work the same as blogs (ad supported) or even paid subscription. maybe just put one as a link on the side of your blog

Thief,

This is some of the most insightful knowledge you have dropped on us. Great posting for your site and for other members to think about.

I'm from Chicago and I will make it a point to fill every in on the Hinrich for Butler situation. Because we dont know what moves the Wizards will make with Arenas out. They may even void his contract.

I can provide an update on if Tyrus might be getting shipped out of Chicago and where to. monitoring all the situation to help everyone receive the quickest, most accurate news possible.

My question for the today is though... who should I dropped for Foye? Bibby, Hibbert, or Barnes.

My Sauce:
FG% -.334(red)
FT% .368(green)
Pts .025
Rebs -.226
Ast -.348(red)
Stls -.475(red)
3pt .027
blks -.141

Good looking out thief!

TCW, I was JUST on nabble trying to put one together. You know of a better site to use?

hey Theif with Arenas now being suspended the value of Jamison Butler Miller and Foye should rise right? with that being said how do you think about this trade i send Bogut, Peirce, Jamison, Brand for Granger, Gerald Wallace Jason terry. its a 10 team h2h points league, im so-so about it cuz of the numbers that jamison can now pull up w/o arrenas
thanks for the help man

yizzle24 said...

well i happen to live in the washington area. Local news here says that the suspension will be for the remainder of the season and possibly longer. Also, the wizards and David Stern may opt to void his contract all together.

LOL! ROFL!

I can tell you the news even before it has happened, cause I can predict it - he will average about 5 points less and about 2 assists more... In any other case that would have actually been great, since as we know 1 assist is 4 times as valuable as 1 point...

But in my case it's a friggin' disaster! I badly need the points, and I don't need the stupid assists, where I'm already sure I'll be first in my league! >_<

As for being here in Bulgaria, I guess all I can do is report about Bulgarian basketball (which in fact I used to do on BulgarianBasket.com), but somehow I can't see that being helpful - the best American player we've had here is Willie Deane, who y'all probably haven't heard of...LOL

Sorry about all the questions thief! Fantasy world is buzzing hard over this Arenas situation.

What do you feel about this 2-1
My Roy Hibbert+ Ariza for His Mo Williams?

I'm thinking of inking this deal and picking up Foye on the waivers.

In addition, the other manager wants Blks. Is this a steal or should I ask for more?

Ben Gordon

hey thief its AC here

last time you said I should try and trade for deron williams or steve nash(one manager in my league has both) thinking of going after nash cause he gets more threes and has better FT% & FG%. So in order to raise my FT% you think I should trade away dwight and duncan

The sun-sentinel reported that the Heat have guaranteed arroyos contract not sure on alston yet but will let you guys know.

Thief said...

Dan, awesome! Add hibbert.

Dip, you're discounting calderon. Trust me.

Aaron, why not Duncan for Nash straight up?

Qwan, I loooove that deal.

Carlo, u get CP3, nuff said

Dipset said...

i dont truly think im discountin him. i do have harris and paul to sit back on when it comes to point guards, and i truly do belive the addition of hedo and jack takes the ball out of calderons hands more so. am i wrong?

Hey Thief,
I would just like to thank you for the analyzer, which will help me greatly in my fantasy leagues. Your blog will be the place to go everyday to recieve my news and advice.

My question is, who should I offer for either Rodney Stuckey, Joe Johnson, or Russell Westbrook in a 2-1 or 3-2 deal, because I am in need of assists. I'm also seeking Brandon Roy from another person in my league so I'm wondering who I should offer.

My Team :
Dwight Howard
Chauncy Billups
Andre Iguodala
Andrea Bargnani
Mehmet Okur
Chris Duhon
David Lee
Richard Jefferson
Josh Smith
Channing Frye
Tayshaun Prince
Kendrick Perkins
John Salmons

His Team :
Rodney Stuckey
Gilbert Arenas
Kobe Bryant
Russell Westbrook
Lamar Odom
Joe Johnson
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Charlie Villanueva
LaMarcus Aldridge
Louis Williams
Omri Casspi
Shawn Marion

Thanks, your help will be appreciated!

THief, I am out in the Bay as well and the Warriors are such a mess i do not know what I could offer the thief nation. The one thing that I do hear on sports talk radio out here is that they like Randolph a lot, so expect him to continue to get time. I have not heard any trade talks as of yet. Next year you will want to get B Wright in a late round. The Warriors are really high on him and he will be getting a lot of time. The sports casters followed preseason pretty closely and said that he was one fo the most improved players, tough to watch him go down.
You will appreciate this move. I just trade N. Rob for M Redd. THe owner bit on that 41 point night. I have a trade out now to get R. Gay, C. Butler, and CP3 for D. Harris, David West, P Pierce, CDR, T Ariza, and J Nelson. Am I giving up to much?

Thief said...

Dip, lol, still think that?

Paul, try Frye and Prince for Westbrook. He just got burned by Arenas though, so he might not be too willing to deal.

Stodds, you able to hook up the new analyzer or u need me to send it to you still?

Dan, LOVE IT

wassap, you figure you're way round here yet?

BigPimpinLil, Love the Trades, LOVE THE NEWS. Keep it workin playa

sup thief,

i agree with you about using local newspaper as a great fantasy sports tool. i have been reading local papers to follow my players for a number of years now. i found this website where it gives you the link to newspapers from all over US.

I am using OpenOffice Calculator, which reads Excel files. That might be the reason.

Now, I offered the trade. I wanted to move Hibbert because he is not consistent. Guess, I'm keeping him. Monta is nice, but I hate the turnovers. His numbers look like Joe Johnson Lite! I understand that we're babying him to drop Hawes, but since he still has Arenas on his team, that's the player he NEEDS to drop. He rejected the trade, but did not counter.

His comments were, "Paul will still provide a better fantasy contribution to my type of team."
The team was Assists and Steals based, but now he's Arenas-less...

Actually, I might be closer to getting Lebron than CP3. A couple weeks ago I got this trade vetoed Melo/CJ Watson/Battier for LBJ/Calderon. The owner did not believe in Jose, but he is back now. With Nash and Melo, I think I have a legitimate chance to nail both of the 1st tier players. Feel me? Thanks again for your help.
