As you can imagine, prop. 8 would have been pretty popular in Fresno. Well, try 84% popular. Businesses all over my neighborhood weren't afraid to display Yes on 8 signs right in their own windows, and I live in the University neighborhood. Racial minorities, the disabled or anybody else isn't obligated to support us just because we're also a sort of minority, and in Fresno, who would want to be friends with us. It's like "Ewww, you're UNPOPULAR!" So, even the freakin' MOSQUE had a yes on 8 sign up! Right on the mosque! I know all the "great religions" are very anti-gay, but, still.
Well, If there's one thing Fresnans can agree upon like brothers and sisters is NO GAY HAPPINESS. (pause for irony) (And now, the punchline...) This isn't good news for my hopes of Fresno becoming a more cosmopolitan place.
It's embarrassing. Would you want to live and breathe in a place like this? A minimal level of support for the Gay community to save face might be 33% support, perhaps.
Well, Fresno's gays are organizing a significant demonstration for equal rights here this Saturday. City Hall, 10:30 am to 12 noon, Be There! If it weren't for Fresno, this thing WOULD have passed. Blame on Blacks (you may have heard that stupid exit poll data) is misplaced. A side note, 3 words: Obama Sugar Cookies! For 20% off, enter promo code "Obama08".
