From how things look at work, the company I work at seems well on its way to shedding about half its work force, which is a strange experience for me. Downsizing of such speed is something I've never seen up close and personal. I mean, people walk out the door, carrying what looks like special papers, a pink slip? Or is it just something else and you're going to see them tomorrow? Now you're being sent out into a world without work in it. It's a hard environment to ask, "well, what now?" I have put a lot of money into the 401K - 30% of every paycheck, so much it's growing despite the loss of 46% my money on the markets! I expect the markets to turn around in afew years and those shares to completely rebound.
A look at the current state of the world economy makes one question that assumption. Are the fundamentals there to expect the markets to be a factor in the next 20 years? Or is the market too dependent on borrowing?
