In the November general election of 2008, Californians voted 51% to 49% (hardly a super majority) to ban same sex marriage in California by enshrining inequality into our state constitution by popular vote. Recently, that measure was upheld by the California Supreme Court in San Fransisco. In most parts of this great state, the measure LOST, but in key locations, sadly, it won. It won in Los Angeles, which was actually an upset victory for the hate initiative ...and it just killed here in Fresno, a city that prides itself on being staunchly conservative, a "family values" city.
Bringing the discussion to Fresnans due to their overwhelming vote to ban same sex marriage (67% city, 84% countywide) became the goal of local marriage equality advocates. The great effort to affect just the attitudes here toward marriage equality has been underway with a handful of young marriage equality advocates knocking on doors to talk gay rights after the election. Plans were made to make Fresno a focal point for marriage equality activists due to the lopsided victory of Proposition 8 here.
So join us! We need everybody who is on our side to show it by showing up. Join the fastest growing LGBT rights advocacy group here in Fresno if your are straight, unbigoted and proud of it!
