I love the show California's Gold with Huell Howser, because every so often Huell scoops a "California Adventure" you never thought of but, once you see it, becomes a must because a) it's right here in your backyard, California, and b) it's something you would travel thousands of miles to do somewhere else in a place worthy of hours cramped in the economy class of an airplane to get to. Thus, go kayaking into the sea caves in Santa Barbara County's Channel Islands National Park is added to such a list.
You can do it for one day, visiting one of the shores and a selection of caves, or if really gung ho, go into more caves over a three day adventure to more of the shorelines with sea caves found throughout the Channel Islands. The kayak tours must be well-guided so you don't get yourself into trouble in one of the caves. There is a plethora of sea caves, many of which are "absolutely spectacular" and relatively safe to explore, ranging from mere arches out over a rocky shore to deep caverns that go back into total darkness, only to see light again and come out on another side or in a beautiful intertidal pool. You are provided with headlamps and helmets, of course, and instructed on how to get through tight spots. Here's who to contact:
